Fire-Resistant Glass
Fire-resistant glass is a specialized type of safety glass designed to withstand high temperatures and prevent the spread of flames and smoke. It is typically constructed from multiple layers of float glass bonded together with fire-resistant interlayers, forming a laminated structure.
In addition to the glass itself, other components-such as frames, seals, and hinges-must also meet specific fire protection standards to ensure full system performance.
Common Applications:
- Hallways and stairwells
- Emergency exit doors
- Partition walls
- Areas requiring building code–mandated fire protection
Fire-resistant glass is available in various fire-resistance ratings, which specify how long the glass can withstand exposure to fire-typically measured in minutes (e.g., 30, 60, or 90 minutes). The higher the fire rating, the more robust the glass-and generally, the higher the cost.
While fire-resistant glass can be more expensive than standard options, it provides critical protection in commercial, public, and high-occupancy buildings where fire safety is a priority.
