RC Rating – Resistance Class
RC stands for Resistance Class, a classification system that defines the burglary resistance level of windows and doors. The RC rating indicates how much time and effort it takes for an intruder to force entry through a given product.
RC Classes:
The classification includes the following levels:
- RC1 / RC1N
- RC2 / RC2N
- RC3
- RC4
- RC5
- RC6
The letter “N” denotes the use of standard (non-safety) glazing, meaning no special security glass is included.
Key Details:
- RC1 to RC3 levels can typically be achieved using uPVC (vinyl) windows.
- Higher classes (RC4–RC6) require more robust materials and advanced reinforcements.
- Testing follows a standardized procedure, where various components are tested individually and as a whole unit.
- The overall classification is only valid if no single component performs below the certified class level.
What the Class Represents:
Each RC class describes how long a specific type of intruder (with or without tools) would need to overcome the product’s resistance. Time is a critical factor, as most burglary attempts are abandoned after a few minutes if the intrusion is unsuccessful.
In summary, the RC rating provides a reliable and standardized way to evaluate how resistant a window or door is against break-ins, helping consumers choose the right level of security for their needs.
